Biological effect assessment modelling tools 

Objective

The main objective of this package is to explore and derive new hypotheses on the physical-chemical properties of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) and nano-enabled products (NEPs) that are responsible for relevant biological effects and functions for SbD purposes.

Activities

This package will explore the physicochemical and biological features that are responsible for ENMs bioactivity and functionality to support the development of new structure–property–function (SPF) and structure–property–hazard (SPH) relationships to guide the rational design of ENMs and NEPs. To this end, partners will work on the compilation, refinement, curation, and treatment of available information on nanostructures and their biological impact to refine predictive models for hazard profiling, the elucidation of refined hypothesis on the structure-property parameters of ENMs that impart both their functional performance and hazard response, and the development of a new toxicological profiling interface to operate with current open science in silico methods, models and tools for grouping, read-across and hazard modelling of ENMs and NEPs.

Key Outcomes

The first outcome is to create new SPF and SPH relationships to refine available hazard profiling models. Following on from this, a user-friendly interface to operate with current nanoinformatics platforms will be developed.
